Frequently Asked Questions:

What does the term "Third World" mean?

It means people. Many people. The little peoples of the world. Little in everything but numbers. There 3.1 billion of them. Historically, they had been under the colonial rule of France, Germany, Spain, Italy England, and Holland, United States of America and Portugal. There are, of course, racial undertones. The colonizers were white. The colonized world is multi colored. Brown. Yellow. Black. Red. There are scars. Deep social, psychological, economic political scars.

Politically, the third world is composed of young nations. Most have gained their independence since 1945. Most are searching for a political middle ground. Virtually, all of them are members of UNCTAD, the world conference of "unaligned nations." But their internal political structure runs from feudalistic oligarchies to state socialism, from democratic capitalism to absolute military dictator ships.

Economically, they are poor. Annual per capita income ranges from a low of $50 to a high of $1,000. As nations, they share common generic problems: "one product" economies. Exploding populations. Unjust world trade structures. And often, unstable, and unjust political systems. Most have been ravage by terrible inflation.

The worst scars are the inner ones, the scars of dependency and fatalism, which have deeply embedded in the Third World consciousness and may take tome to heal. Consider the difficulty Jehovah had in delivering the children of Israel from 400 years of slavery in Egypt – about the same length of time as the modern colonial period. It took fourteen months and just over a dozen miracles to deliver them from Pharaoh. But it took forty years and a continuous stream of miracles to liberate them from a slave mentality.

It is within one such Third World context, particularly in the Philippines, that Reach is hammering out a holistic disciplemaking ministry Reach holds that the Lord God who wrapped Himself in particular.  Jewish flesh also has a particular message of Good News for the Third World.  It is fundamentally a spiritual message of reconciliation through the incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  This message, when believed and lived, results in a radical reorientation of life called discipleship.

Such life does not take place in a vacuum but in the stables, market places and other crossroads of life.  Disciples are created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared beforehand for them to do.  Disciples, in the pattern of their Master, address themselves to man's needs, man's sins, and the issue of truth in defining the meaning of man's life.  The Good News has to be preached and lived in the context that will make witnessing effective.

What does 'contextualize' mean?

To contextualize the gospel and Bible study means adapting the Bible applications into the local culture. It means NOT using Western examples to explain and apply spiritual principles. It means NOT using Western methods to help them economically and socially. It means making the gospel and the spiritual life a part of their culture, and not making them to be a part of Western culture.

Why does RMI not start churches?

RMI is not a church. Because of their size and purpose churches minister mostly to people in groups with some personal counseling.
